A Guide to what fruit trees can be grafted together?

apple tree renovation by the grafting

It seems like a myth – being able to graft together different types of fruit trees, and them working together and still producing two different fruits. It sounds like it would not work? Doesn’t it? Today we are going to find out what fruit trees that can be grafted together as well as how to graft an apple tree, and more. This is an almost biological approach to gardening and it can be super fun and rewarding.

What is tree grafting?

Grafting is when the tissue layer of the rootstock, and the scion grow together. The upper part of the graft is called the scion, and the lower part is called the rootstock. These are normally different tree varieties. This depends on the variety and species of tree you are trying to graft. For instance, an oak tree and a maple may not work, but a lot of citrus tree varieties are compatible with each other.

How to graft an apple tree?

Here we will learn how to graft an apple tree is amazing. Most apple tree varieties will graft with each other, it will take a lot of time to persevere and have some trial and error. But you will get there! Tree grafting is super fun and rewarding.

How to tree graft?

Using sharp tools is really the key to this. The most beginner one is Cleft grafting. This involves diagonally cutting a shion branch into the straight cut rootstock with a notch in the middle. A sloping cut is made in the scion, matching the cambium tissue when it is attached with the rootstock.

Upkeep

As with any graft or surgery, it needs to be maintained and cared for to prevent disease. You can protect this by wrapping in tape, and make sure all exposed surfaces are covered. Except the obvious graft area.

Can you graft an apple to a pear tree?

It is most likely you will not be able to graft an apple and a pear. They are both members of the same Roseceae family, but not the same Genus. This genus is important because the trees and fruit have to be botanically compatible somewhat in order to be able to graft.

Grafting apple trees

Grafting apple trees is a time honoured tradition. Since Roman times there has been a multitude of types of apples in the UK. This is because they knew about grafting and they even managed to have many different varieties on the same tree, with more growing every year! This still is vital to learn, because it is a sure fire way to get results. If you want to be sure of growing a tree that can be cultivated, you need to take a cutting, as it is the most sure way of getting results.

Grafting fruit trees

People do like to graft fruit trees, as well as being interesting and an experiment, it can also be highly practical. Grafting trees not only gives you two different varieties on one tree, but it can also mean that if one was vulnerable to one thing, the other tree may cover it for that and help it, so the two plant genes will work together and be able to  make each other resistant to various things.

Are pear trees grafted?

Pears are limited compared to Apples for grafting. You can – however graft them onto quince trees, which are smaller trees than pear, but usually produce fruit after 3 years. Pear trees can not easily be grafted onto apple trees, they require being grafted onto a variety of Apple called the winter banana, and once that has taken, then grafted onto the apple variety of your choice. This is very hit and miss, and the winter banana does not always take to the pear. But if you have a bit of time spare to try it out it can certainly be rewarding!

Can you graft any trees together

No – the simple answer is no. The trees need to be somewhat similar in order to be able to live together in harmony. Think about when we as humans get a donated organ or blood transfusion, it needs to be similar enough to not get rejected by the stem lant.

Blueberry tree grafting

This is a common one. People do graft blueberry varieties in order to get a better yield, or even fruit types. This is very exciting because blueberries are super tasty!

Chip Budding

Chip Budding is another way to graft, and it could be the easiest way to graft. This involves attaching a bud onto a root, and letting the tree grow this way. You will really have to experiment with something like his and see if it works for you. You need to choose a strong rootstock , these can be bought. W+You need to choose this wisely in order to get the best traits.

Chip grafting apple trees

This is done the same way. Attaching a bud from a newly budding plant onto a rootstock could just be the way to cultivate lots of varieties of apple in a quick and easier way than that of making incisions into the trees.

Grafted Jaboticaba tree for sale

These special Brazilian fruit trees are very interesting and exotic because they are only found in Brazil. The closest other fruit to compare them to would be grapes. But the flesh of the fruit is more jelly like and firm. Really something to be tried! These plants propagate well by grafting and also by the seeds. Something to totally experiment with .

Best time to graft apple trees UK

The best time to graft is in the spring time when the buds are beginning to open. Do this before the blossoming has finished. We usually recommend April – Early May time for this.

You can even do double grafted fruit trees.

Fruit tree grafting wax

You may want to purchase some of this in order to help your tree grafting go more smoothly. This will work in a number of ways, and is recommended by our master gardeners.

Grafted vs natural weeping cherry tree

Although they are pretty much the same plant there are still differences. The grafted version will naturally be different. The weeping cherry tree does need to be trained to grow and sometimes this will require some interference.

Grafting avocado on mango tree

This is not possible – they are not in the same family, so the tree will not even take the graft. You can alternatively graft an avo onto a bay laurel and a mango to a cashew. Exciting!

We hope you have learned how to graft an apple tree! And grafting pears onto apple trees. We are always surprised by how much people know about this subject but most people have never put it into practice, so hopefully this guide has helped you!
